COMPARISON
AI try-on image or wearing it yourself: which is better?
Honesty, effort, privacy and effect compared directly.
We are kiki, so we are not neutral. That’s why the criteria are out in the open.
In short
Wearing it yourself looks real, but takes time, needs the right size and shows you. An AI try-on image shows the fit without you, but only comes across as honest when it looks realistic, is labelled and your real photos come right behind it. In its photo tips, Vinted says it’s a good idea to avoid showing your face. So our recommendation: show the fit without you.
Comparison
| Comparison | Wearing it yourself | AI try-on image |
|---|---|---|
| Credibility | High, it’s the real item on a body | Yes, if realistic and labelled |
| Privacy | No, you’re in the picture | Yes, without you |
| Works even if the item doesn’t fit you | No | Yes |
| Effort per item | Changing, lighting, photos | One photo on the hanger |
| Risk | Photos of you can be copied | Looks like a gimmick if they all look the same |
| What Vinted says | Photo tips: better to avoid showing your face (point 8) | Statement to ÖKO-TEST: not banned per se if the item is shown accurately |
What puts buyers off AI try-on images?
According to a German Reddit discussion reported by WEB.DE, mainly two things: glossy cover photos followed by disappointing real photos, and profiles where every item hangs on the same person in the same pose. An AI try-on image works when it looks like a normal photo taken at home.
Glossary
- Worn image
- A photo showing a garment worn on the body.
- AI try-on image
- A worn image generated with artificial intelligence from a real photo of the item. It should be labelled as such.
- Labelling
- A note that an image was made with AI, visible in the image or text and machine-readable in the file.
Frequently asked questions
Do photos of yourself wearing it sell better?
There are no reliable public figures on that. What matters is that buyers can see the fit and the condition.
Do I have to show myself so buyers can see the fit?
No. Vinted’s photo tips even say it’s a good idea to avoid showing your face, and name a hanger, a mannequin or a flat lay as alternatives. A labelled AI try-on image shows the fit.
What goes next to the AI try-on image?
Your real photos on the hanger and the details, right behind the AI try-on image.
