Light and background: the photo set-up at home.

A window, a wall, a phone. That's all you need.

In short

The best photo studio is a window on an overcast day. Place the item so the light comes from the front or the side, switch the flash off and choose a light, calm wall. Hold the phone level with the item, not from above, or the proportions get distorted.

  • Window light
  • Calm wall
  • Phone at item height

How do you set up your photo spot?

  1. Find a window.

Indirect daylight is ideal. Direct sun casts harsh shadows; a thin curtain helps.

  2. Flash off.

Flash flattens colours and makes fabrics shine. Vinted's photo tips also advise natural daylight and no flash or filters.

  3. Choose a background.

A wall, a door, a curtain. Contrast helps: light items in front of something darker, dark items in front of something light.

  4. Get the height right.

Hold the phone level with the middle of the item. From above, everything looks shorter.

  5. Clean the lens.

A fingerprint on the lens makes every photo look milky.

  6. Portrait format.

Most clothes are taller than they are wide and fill the frame in portrait format.

Frequently asked questions

What time of day is best?

Late morning or early afternoon on a bright, slightly overcast day.

What do I do in the evening?

Shine a lamp at a white wall and use the indirect light, instead of photographing straight into the lamp.

Do I need a ring light?

No. Daylight is perfectly enough for clothes.

Should I use filters?

No. Filters change colours, and buyers want to see the real colour.
