REFERENCE · GLOSSARY
Glossary: selling second-hand from A to Z.
The terms around photos, sizes, platforms and rules, briefly explained.
In short
This glossary explains the key terms for anyone selling second-hand clothes: from photo types such as flat lay and ghost mannequin, through sizing such as W/L and petite, to rules such as buyer protection, HMRC platform reporting and the EU AI Act. Every definition is short and needs no prior knowledge.
All terms
- AI try-on image
- A worn image generated with artificial intelligence from a real photo of the item. It should be labelled as such.
- Bundle
- Several items sold together, often for a combined price.
- Buyer protection
- Protection for buyers who pay through the platform. On Vinted, a Vinted fee is added to purchases made with “Buy now”; on eBay it's the eBay Money Back Guarantee, which covers the purchase price and original postage on eligible purchases.
- Cover photo
- The first photo of a listing. It's the photo buyers see first when they scroll.
- Digital platform reporting
- Platforms report details about sellers to HMRC. Sellers with fewer than 30 sales of goods a year and a total of €2,000 (about £1,700) or less don't need to be reported.
- EU AI Act
- EU Regulation 2024/1689. Its transparency duties for AI-generated content have applied since 2 August 2026. It is EU law; the UK is not an EU member.
- Flat lay
- Clothes photographed flat from above, usually on the floor, a table or a bed.
- Ghost mannequin
- A photo on a mannequin that is then retouched out, so the item looks as if it holds its shape by itself.
- Inside leg
- The inner leg length of trousers, measured from the crotch seam to the hem.
- Labelling
- A note that an image was created with AI, visible in the image or text and machine-readable in the file.
- ONO
- Or nearest offer. A note in classified listings that the price is open to negotiation.
- Petite
- A size range for shorter women; at Marks & Spencer, for example, for women around 160 cm (5ft 3in): shorter sleeves, legs and body. Each brand sets its own limit.
- Pilling
- Small bobbles on the surface of fabric, especially on knitwear. Counts as a sign of wear and belongs in the listing.
- Pro account
- An account for business sellers on Vinted, called Vinted Pro. Vinted explains who needs one on its Pro page.
- Tall
- A size range for taller women: longer sleeves and legs.
- Try-on image
- A photo showing an item of clothing worn on a body.
- W/L
- Jeans sizes in inches: W for waist, L for length (inside leg).
